Fun Weekend Activities
- Fenway Says- Fenway struggles at first with commands in his dog training classes. See how you would do in a ‘kid training class’ with quick simple directions. Discuss how the speed of the demands increase the difficulty of following directions. This might help you understand how Fenway tries to understand Hattie and follow the directions. (see attached for direction examples)
- Visualization- Imagine that you are a dog. VIsualize taking a walk through the neighborhood from a dog’s perspective. Close your eyes and think about what you might see, hear, smell, and touch on your walk. What do they look like from a dog’s perspective? Two pre-recorded samples of this exercise are available on Victoria J Coe’s home page, www.victoriajcoe.com (classroom tab)
- Name It- Fenway has clever names for items and people that are different from the ones we typically use. What would you name yourself? What are some names that you might give to other people in your family, school, or community? For example, your mom might be the Cookie Maker or Hug Giver and the mail carrier could be the envelope deliverer. Create a list of alternate names for people or objects (use dog bone paper to write your list--turn in for chance to win next Fenway book!).
- Happiest Moment Ever (p.161)- Fenway’s happiest moment ever is when he and Hattie are back together and she is brushing his fur and singing. Think about your Happiest Moment Ever. Talk about it with your family. Then, draw a picture or write about it.
